We Want What You've Got!!!

Join our team at The Haven and help make a real difference in our community and  area.
We’re looking for compassionate, reliable volunteers to support our harm/risk reduction programs serving people in the Brussels and surrounding area.

How Can You Can Get Involved

The Haven is founded on the belief that its survival is based on community involvement and ownership. Working together volunteers, general community members and those who access our service make a safer place for ALL of us.

  We need YOU!

Drop In Volunteer

Those who volunteer in this way provide direct support to those who walk through the door at 422 Turnberry Street.  This support can involve everything from a listening ear, helping people connect to other local resources to meet their needs (phone numbers, addresses), helping select items from the food share pantry, helping people access and fill out online appointments or forms to sharing harm reduction tips.  It also means an interest in fun things, too, like socializing over cards or a board game over a coffee/tea or snacks.

In The Community Volunteer

Volunteers in this category provided support outside of the walls of Haven. Opportunities for those interested in this category include:

  • Helping Hands Volunteer- These are individuals who help those not able to do household chores, such as yard maintenance projects, such as cutting lawn, shrub trimming, garden weeding, or seasonal preparational yard work, household organization tasks (downsizing, etc).
  • Haven Driving Service:  these volunteers take individuals to medical appointments, out-of-town grocery shopping, or to work-related appointments such as job interviews.

Driving service volunteers must be willing to have their own cars and be able to use their vehicles legally in this manner.

Support Volunteer

There is an old saying that "Behind every good man there is an good woman."  This is very true of "good" organizations as well.  For an organization to work well and effectively provide the needs that it is trying to address an army of unseen volunteers exist providing their service without fanfare and quietly in the background.  Without them success would not be possible.

If you are one of these "unseen" ones you can volunteer at the Haven in one of the following ways:

  • set up and tear down at events e.g. Haven
BBQ events, special events or workshops
  • project/fundraising management volunteer
  • supply pickup
  • snacks/treat provision

Administration Volunteer

There are a very special group of individuals who have been gifted with the skills needed to make sure that all of an organization or business's i's are dotted and t's are crossed.  The Haven is looking for those people.  If you are one of them you can be involved by:

  • blog writing for our website
  • keeping our online social media presence up to date and relevant (posting upcoming events, advertising and marketing the Haven on various platforms)
  • photocopying and collating for workshops and training sessions
  • designing hardcopy media (using Canva) to be physically put up around Brussels and the surrounding area

Harm Reduction Peer Workers

Be part of creating a safer, more respectful community for everyone.  Tired of seeing too many friends, losing their life to overdose, infections, Hep C, as a Haven peer worker, carry a naloxone kit and safer supplies.  Be a trusted human bridge to people getting help when they need it.

As a peer worker, you have the opportunity to help others understand substance use and share your story with the larger community in general through Haven community workshops

If you are someone who has found harm reduction a helpful thing in your life to make life changes and reach goals you never thought you could, we are looking for you as a peer too!
